Where Does CBD Come From? – Hemp and cannabis are both beneficial plants that can impact one’s life. Then, there are cannabinoids like Cannabidiol (CBD) that can be extracted from industrial hemp and cannabis. Where CBD comes from is interesting to many because it is derived from more than one source.
Regardless of where CBD comes from, it can deliver numerous potential properties to consumers. Even though hemp and cannabis plants have beneficial effects, they are different from one another. One main difference between these plants are the unique effects they deliver.
Learn more about where CBD comes from, the extraction of this cannabinoid, and several differences between hemp and cannabis plants by reading on.
Hemp Plants Versus Cannabis Plant: The Basics
Besides hemp and cannabis being beneficial plants, they both come from the same plant species called Cannabis Sativa L. Although they deliver different effects to users, they look similar in appearance. This is one reason why many people confuse hemp with cannabis.
Oftentimes, when the term ‘cannabis’ is used, it is normally meant to describe a Cannabis Sativa plant that was grown for its psychoactive effects and THC-rich trichomes. Whereas, when the term ‘hemp’ is used, it is typically meant to describe a Cannabis Sativa plant that contains very low levels of THC.
In addition, unlike whole cannabis plants, hemp plants are non-psychoactive. This is why individuals do not feel high after consuming hemp-based products. However, hemp contains various potential benefits just like cannabis plants do. Then, the parts of hemp plants that are commonly consumed include its seeds, fibers, and oils.
Not only do cannabis plants contain several cannabinoids like CBD, they also contain terpenes and other phytocannabinoids.
Furthermore, one 1976 study summed up the classification of hemp and cannabis by stating the following: “…both hemp varieties and marijuana varieties are of the same genus, Cannabis, and the same species, Cannabis Sativa. Further, there are countless varieties that fall into additional classifications within the species Cannabis Sativa.”
Fortunately for us consumers, CBD can be extracted from hemp and cannabis plants.
Uses for Hemp & Where CBD Comes from in Hemp and Cannabis Plants
Historically, hemp has been grown for agricultural, industrial, and medicinal purposes. Then, in recent years, hemp-derived Cannabidiol (CBD) has increased in popularity and usage all over the world. Although hemp serves a plethora of purposes, its health properties keep attracting countless people worldwide.
Additionally, not only can CBD be extracted from hemp, but this plant is very eco-friendly and sustainable. It is safe to say that hemp is a versatile, effective, and quality crop. Hemp can also make a huge difference in the agriculture and industrial sectors in addition to providing CBD. However, medical marijuana’s psychoactive effects and variety of medicinal benefits are keeping people’s interest as well.
Now that you know where CBD comes from, where is it found within hemp and cannabis plants? Regarding the whole cannabis plant, its leaves and flowering buds contain high levels of THC and other cannabinoids. Whereas, hemp fibers and seeds that are highly populated on the plant’s stalks contain high levels of CBD.
Cannabis and Hemp Classifications
Sadly, and surprisingly, cannabis remains a Schedule I illegal substance in America despite its vast capabilities. Oppositely, hemp cultivation and consumption are becoming less restrictive. Since hemp is a non-psychoactive plant, hemp-derived products are legal to consume as long as they contain very little THC.
Oddly enough, various countries have their own definitions of hemp. For example, Health Canada views hemp as products of the Cannabis Sativa plant that possess no more than 0.3 percent THC. However, America views hemp as all parts of Cannabis Sativa plants that possess zero psychoactive effects.
All in all, hemp’s array of benefits and ability to extract CBD is widely recognized and appreciated.
Even though hemp and cannabis plants are different than one another, they also share various similarities. The benefits these plants can deliver are powerful, especially providing CBD to consumers. Despite Cannabidiol being a versatile cannabinoid, where CBD comes from is also versatile.
In Short…
“Cannabis” is the overarching term to refer to hemp and marijuana plants. Hemp and marijuana both produce identical buds, stalks and leaves. Their differences simply exist on a cellular level. Marijuana plants produce unique amounts of cannabinoids including a high amount of THC – the psychoactive chemical that gives consumers the famous “high.”
Hemp, which is what we utilize at Infinite CBD, produces the same amount of cannabinoids and shows a high amount of those being CBD. In turn, this means the plant did not prove high amounts of THC. This, in summary, gives consumers all the potential benefits of marijuana without the psychoactive high.
From there it is all personal preference. Some cannabis consumers truly enjoy the variation of psychoactive effects much like wine enthusiast enjoy exploring a variety of wine. On the flip side, many consumers enjoy the difference between different terpene profiles or levels of relaxation without exiting true sobriety.
