August 14, 2023The History of 420
420 is a term that has become synonymous with hemp and cannabis culture. Hemp and cannabis are two different plants, but both are used to extract THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid that gets us “high”. It is widely recognized as a code word for cannabis and THC use. But where did this term come from, and how did it become so popular? In this blog, we will explore the history of 420 and how it has become an iconic symbol of counter culture.
Origins
The exact origins of 420 are unknown and there are many theories as to where this holiday came about. One theory can be traced back to a group of high school students in San Rafael, California in the early 1970s. The group would meet up after school at 4:20 pm to smoke. The term 420 was used as a code word for their THC use, as it was a time when they could safely partake without getting caught by parents or authorities. Other theories believe that it was once a reference to a police code for THC use, while others think it is a nod to the birthday of famous cannabis activist, Willie Nelson. However, there is no concrete evidence to support these theories, and the true origins of 4/20 remain shrouded in mystery.
Why It’s Important
420 is an important holiday to shred the stigma of cannabis because by embracing and celebrating 420, individuals are able to come together to acknowledge the positive aspects of cannabis culture, such as community, creativity, and relaxation. It also challenges the negative stereotypes and misinformation. This can help to reduce the stigma and fear surrounding cannabis use, and promote a more open and honest conversation about the potential benefits and drawbacks of THC. Additionally, as more and more states and countries move towards legalization, 420 provides an opportunity for individuals and communities to celebrate this progress and continue advocating for the full decriminalization of cannabis.
Celebrations
In our hometown of Denver, celebrations center around the Mile High 420 Festival. There are celebrations all over the country from New York to LA. They take place in various locations around the world, depending on local laws and customs. In places where cannabis is legal for recreational use, such as California and Colorado in the United States the festivals and celebrations are more widespread and open. 420 celebrations may take place at public parks or events. In other places where cannabis is still illegal, 420 celebrations may be more discreet and take place in private locations. Additionally, many cannabis-themed events and festivals take place on or around April 20th, providing opportunities for individuals to come together and celebrate the culture and community surrounding THC use.
Defeating the Stigma
The stigma of cannabis use is misguided and often rooted in misinformation. For centuries, cannabis has been used for a variety of purposes all over the world, from medicinal to recreational. Many ancient cultures, such as those in Asia and the Middle East, used cannabis. In the 20th century, the perception of cannabis began to shift due to a combination of political, social, and economic factors. In the United States, for example, cannabis was criminalized in the 1930s as part of the “War on Drugs,” which was largely fueled by racial and political motivations rather than scientific evidence. This led to a negative perception of cannabis use that has persisted to this day, despite growing evidence of its medical benefits and low potential for addiction and harm compared to other substances such as alcohol and tobacco.
